The camera has become a cornerstone of smartphone differentiation. Consumers are coming to expect high-end cameras as standard, and manufacturers are rushing to meet that demand.
The recently-released OPPO Find X is a testament to this trend, with it being one of the first smartphones to launch with a pop-up camera.
Working in much the same way as you would find on a compact camera, the OPPO Find X’s dual-camera system slides up from the base of the phone when you’re ready to snap a photo. It’s a novel implementation that allows for some great photography results - but it also comes at a price.
The OPPO Find X not only has one of the most expensive sticker prices we’ve ever seen on an Android phone, but its second camera makes it ineligible for many manufacturer loyalty programs and phone trade-in programs.

OPPO Find X Full Review
The OPPO Find X is a powerful phone that can do many things very well. It’s just a shame that it has to sacrifice so much in the name of looks. Design and Build Quality The OPPO Find X is a gorgeous phone.
It’s also one of the most confusing new phones to launch this year. The OPPO Find X is a very unique-looking phone, with its most striking feature being the pop-up camera. The camera sits inside a slide-out tray at the top of the phone that looks very much like the one you’d find on a compact camera.
The moving parts are what make the phone so expensive, and they also make it incompatible with many other features. The OPPO Find X comes in black and a “hyper-orange” color, but not all of them are created equal. The orange edition is made from a type of ceramic that is extremely scratch-resistant.
This material doesn’t feel like plastic and has a nice weight to it, but it’s very slippery and hard to hold onto. Even the normal black version is a fingerprint magnet, and it seems to be made from a version of glass that attracts smudges like a magnet. The Find X camera tray is extremely fragile, and the phone is water-resistant but not water-proof.
Screen and Audio
The OPPO Find X’s screen is a 6.42-inch OLED panel with a 1080x2340 resolution. It is a stunning display, with rich and vibrant colors that are very accurate. The only downside is the lack of an Always On Display feature, which is becoming increasingly common.
The OPPO Find X’s audio quality is solid, but its single bottom-firing speaker is nothing special. It gets reasonably loud, but the lack of stereo sound makes it feel very one-dimensional. The Find X also lacks any type of water resistance, which is becoming normal on many high-end phones.
Camera - Dual Camera Setup
OPPO Find X’s biggest selling point is its innovative camera system. The phone has a pop-up camera that’s very reminiscent of the camera on the original Xiaomi Mi Mix. The camera slides up from the top of the phone and uses gesture controls to stay hidden until it’s ready to be used.
When the camera is retracted, a small pivot sits in its place so you can still click the power button. The Find X’s camera system is made up of a 16MP main camera and a 20MP secondary camera. The main camera is used for all your everyday photography, while the secondary camera is used for portrait mode and a few other advanced features.
The camera performs admirably in a variety of lighting conditions and is capable of producing some very nice-looking photos. The Find X’s portrait mode is one of the best we’ve ever used, but it’s not perfect.
It struggles in low light, and its bokeh effect isn’t as realistic as it is on a dedicated portrait mode camera like Google’s Pixel 3. We also noticed that the camera shutter sound is very loud when the camera is retracted, so you have to be careful when taking photos indoors.
Battery Life - Big Disappointment
We were really excited to see what OPPO’s first battery-centric phone would look like. The Find X has a large 3,730 mAh battery pack inside, which is larger than the battery that’s found inside the Samsung Galaxy S9.
Sadly, the battery inside the Find X doesn’t hold up to the one inside Samsung’s flagship. The Find X lasted less than a day when we tested it in an average daily usage scenario. This is a terrible result for a flagship phone, and we were extremely surprised to see it perform so poorly.
